Chapter Twelve

QUIRIN

Kaimana was making fun of him. Quirin just knew it. He also liked the man’s dry humor, which made this morning even better. He was living his very own Christmas romance with the kindest, funniest, not to mention best-looking man Quirin had ever laid eyes on and the only thing diminishing the greatness of it all was his departure looming like a very black cloud only two days away. Why hadn’t Melissa booked him in until New Year’s Eve or however long Kai stayed here? A question she would have to answer as soon as he got back home. Or perhaps he could call her today and impress on her the necessity of him staying longer because he hadn’t been able to get the full experience yet? Of the hotel, of course. Not of having a romance with his accidental roommate. Oh no not him. Professionalism was his middle name. Perhaps he could convince her that the haunted elevator needed closer observation? Branching out into haunted places seemed like a brilliant idea right at the moment.

“Where do you want to go first?” Kaimana’s voice interrupted Quirin’s plotting.

“Uhm, let’s see. What do we have?” Quirin looked at the shops lined up next to the reception area. “How about we start with the souvenir shop? Unless you need clothes?” He pointed to the sportswear shop with the standard winter clothes on display. Quirin was sure he would be able to find something to his tastes in there if he went into hunting mode, but why bother when there was a souvenir shop nearby promising the best cheesy tokens one could wish for?

“No, I’m good.”

Quirin took that as his cue to drag Kaimana into the shop where they were greeted by a hyped-up version of “Jingle Bells” with more electric guitar action than Quirin thought could be put into the song and a shelf with a row of Santa’s in rainbow boxers and not much else on them. It was paradise. He stepped closer to inspect the indecent Santas with their little bellies and the huge sacks they were leaning on. They were four dollars each, a reasonable price for such a fantastic gag gift. Quirin selected two, one for himself, and one for Kenny, a friend of his at It’s a Beautiful World, who would be able to appreciate the humor. Out of nowhere, a wicker basket appeared in his line of sight. He looked up.

“I thought we could use something to put our purchases in.” Kai winked. Quirin felt his heart doing several somersaults. Perfection. The man was perfection.

“Thank you.”

“Always. It’s what the travel blogger help is for.” Kaimana bowed over the basket. “How do we proceed? I must admit, I’m a bit overwhelmed by it all.” He looked around the shop that was an explosion of color and glitter, mainly in green, red, and gold due to the season, but with rainbows thrown in for good measure.

“I’d say we just browse, see what catches our eye.” Quirin winked.

“Uh, Quirin, everything here is designed to catch our eyes.
